Journal metrics are journal-level, always
Quartiles, SJR, h-index, and citation ratios describe a journal. They say nothing about the article in front of you. A Q1 journal publishes weak papers. A Q3 journal publishes excellent ones. Retractions occur in the most prestigious venues in the world. No indicator on this site is evidence that a specific finding is correct, and using one that way is a misuse of it.
The quartile shown may not be your field's quartile
Following SCImago's own convention, the quartile displayed is the best quartile across all of a journal's subject categories. A journal can be Q1 in a small niche category and Q3 in the large category that actually describes your work, and it will display as Q1. For anything consequential, read the per-category breakdown and use the category relevant to your field.
Snapshots age
Journal data comes from annual snapshots. Indexing status changes throughout the year: journals are added, and journals are removed, sometimes for serious reasons. A journal's current standing is applied to papers of any age, so a 2010 article in a journal that is Q1 today displays as Q1 even if it was Q3 when the article appeared.

Journal Intelligence is a screening aid, not a verdict
This is the most important limitation on the site.
Equally, a clean profile is not a clearance. A well-run predatory operation can produce unremarkable-looking metrics.
Warning-list matching is performed by name against public lists compiled by third parties, principally archived versions of Beall's List. Those lists are themselves contested, are not maintained to a uniform standard, and contain entries that are disputed or out of date. Journal names are also matched imperfectly: different journals share similar titles, titles change, and hijacked journals deliberately imitate legitimate ones. A name match is a prompt to investigate, never a finding of fact about a journal or its editors.
If you believe a journal has been mischaracterised by this tool, please tell us. Such reports are treated as urgent.
Absent badges are not judgements
A blank badge means one of three things: the journal is in neither Scopus nor Web of Science; the journal name shown was too truncated or ambiguous to identify safely; or the item is a proceeding, chapter, thesis, or preprint that these journal indexes do not cover. It never means the work is poor. A great deal of the strongest research in computer science, the humanities, and the arts appears in venues these indexes do not track.
What is not included
- Journal Impact Factor. A licensed Clarivate metric, not included here. Cites-per-document figures come from Scopus and will not match a JIF quoted elsewhere.
- CiteScore. Scopus's own journal metric, not included.
- Peer-review quality, editorial rigour, or ethical practice. No indicator here measures any of these.
