Somewhere in most research careers there is a moment when a quartile stops being an abstraction. A promotion form has a column for it. A supervisor asks whether the target journal is Q1. A funding application wants the indexing status of every output listed. At that point the badge stops describing a journal and starts describing you.
It is worth knowing, before that moment, what the number is actually made of.
What SJR computes
SCImago Journal Rank is a prestige-weighted citation average. Two parts of that phrase carry the weight.
It is an average per document. SJR counts citations received in a given year to documents the journal published in the preceding three years, then divides by the number of those documents. Size is normalised away: a journal publishing 60 articles a year and one publishing 600 are compared on the same scale. This is why a small, specialised journal can outrank a large flagship, and why volume alone cannot inflate the figure.
It is prestige-weighted. This is the part that distinguishes SJR from a simple citation ratio, and it is borrowed from the same intuition as Google's PageRank. Not every citation counts the same. A citation from a journal that is itself heavily cited by heavily cited journals transfers more value than one from a journal nothing cites. The algorithm iterates until the weights settle, so a journal's score depends on the standing of the journals citing it, which in turn depends on the standing of the journals citing them.
Two consequences follow, and neither is obvious from looking at a badge.
First, SJR is a network position, not a count. A journal can raise its raw citation numbers without moving its SJR much, if the new citations come from peripheral venues. Conversely a journal cited less often, but by central journals in its field, scores better than the raw count suggests.
Second, the value is field-dependent in a way that cannot be reasoned away. Citation cultures differ enormously. Molecular biologists cite quickly, densely, and in large reference lists. Historians and applied linguists cite more slowly, more sparsely, and often to books that the database does not track well. An SJR of 1.5 is strong in education research and unremarkable in genomics. There is no universal threshold for a good SJR, and anyone quoting one across disciplines is quoting nothing.
What the quartile adds
The quartile exists to solve exactly that comparability problem. Within each subject category, SCImago ranks every journal by SJR and cuts the list into four equal groups. Q1 is the top 25 per cent of that category, Q2 the next 25, and so on.
Because the cut is made inside a field, the quartile travels across disciplines far better than the raw score. A Q1 journal in applied linguistics and a Q1 journal in immunology are each in the top quarter of their own list, whatever the absolute numbers look like. This is a genuine improvement, and it explains why institutions have converged on quartiles rather than scores.
But the improvement comes with a structural feature that is widely missed.
The best-quartile convention
Consider a plausible case. A journal covering language teaching is classified in Linguistics and Language, a large and competitive category, and also in Education, and also in a smaller category such as Language and Linguistics in the arts and humanities list. It might rank Q2 in the first, Q2 in the second, and Q1 in the third, because the third category is small and its median journal is cited less.
The badge says Q1. That is not an error. It is true in exactly one of the three categories, and it is the one least likely to be the category your assessors have in mind.
The practical rule follows directly: for anything consequential, read the per-category breakdown and use the category that describes your work. Either takes about fifteen seconds, and it is fifteen seconds well spent before a submission you will wait six months for.
Where the number does not reach
Everything above concerns what SJR measures accurately. It is at least as important to be clear about what it does not touch at all.
- It says nothing about the article. This is the most consequential confusion in the whole area. SJR is an average over a journal's output. Averages contain a distribution, and citation distributions are extremely skewed: a small number of papers attract most citations, and a large share of papers in any journal are barely cited at all. The quartile tells you about the venue, and it is not evidence that the specific paper in front of you is correct, well-designed, or important.
- It says nothing about peer review. No component of the calculation observes whether review was rigorous, cursory, or performed at all.
- It is not the Journal Impact Factor. The JIF is Clarivate's licensed metric, computed from Web of Science over a two-year window without prestige weighting. SJR is Elsevier-derived, three-year, weighted. They rank journals differently and quoting one as though it were the other is a common and avoidable error.
- It is a snapshot with lag. Values are published annually and rest on a three-year citation window. A journal that declined sharply last year still carries the standing it earned earlier, and a journal improving rapidly is undervalued for a while.
- It handles books and proceedings badly. In fields where the monograph or the refereed conference paper is the primary venue — much of the humanities, most of computer science — the journal-citation graph simply does not see the important work.
How to use it well
None of this makes the metric useless. It makes it a triage instrument, which is a real and valuable thing to be.
Use it to sort, not to judge. Faced with forty search results, indexing and quartile information is a defensible way to decide what to read first. That is its strongest legitimate use, and it is genuinely useful.
Match the category before the quartile. A Q2 journal that the people in your subfield actually read is a better home for your paper than a Q1 journal in an adjacent field where it will be invisible. Quartiles measure citation position; they do not measure whether your intended readers will ever encounter the work.
Check the coverage years. A journal whose Scopus coverage ended two years ago has been discontinued from the database. Whatever the historical quartile says, your paper will not be indexed there. This single check catches a class of expensive mistakes and takes one glance.
Do not add quartiles together. “Twelve Q1 papers” is close to meaningless without author position, field, and the actual contribution. Every experienced panel member knows this, and a CV that leans on the aggregate signals that its author has mistaken the indicator for the achievement.

The underlying point
A quartile compresses a three-year weighted citation network into a single character. Compression that aggressive is useful precisely because it discards information, and dangerous for the same reason. The badge is a reasonable place to start a question about a journal. It is a poor place to end one, and an indefensible place to end a question about a piece of research.
